Center of Research on Hydrogen (NUPHI)
Hydrogen is considered the fuel of the future, due to its efficiency and for not generating greenhouse effect pollutants. One of the ways to produce hydrogen is from electricity, which is used in the water electrolysis. This allows the exploitation of the Brazilian hydroelectric potential in the spillage periods of the hydroelectric power plants, in addition to wind and solar power sources. The research on hydrogen as an energy vector was boosted with the installation of the Hydrogen Production Plant in PTI, in 2014.
Among the studies performed in NUPHI there is the one about the life cycle of hydrogen, the viability of production from hydroelectric energy and the use in fuel cells for charging electric vehicles' batteries and auxiliary energy systems.
In 2016 happened the disassembly of all the component parts of the Plant, with the purpose of studying the production system and nationalize its internal components, specifically the electrolyzer and its system of control monitoring. This study provided the generation of deep knowledge about the components of the electrolytic production of hydrogen, allowing the training of human resources, technology studies and material tests, aiming at adapting this technology to the national production reality in the future.
Also in 2016 technical and scientific partnerships were consolidated with the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), University of Latin American Integration (UNILA) and the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), in order to propitiate the generation of research on the topic Hydrogen. NUPHI's research generated three scientific articles published in national and international magazines. With the acquired knowledge, new ideas about the topic of energy storage were elaborated for Eletronorte and other energy companies.
